Cleeve Common Trust Membership
Love the Common? You can now become a member of Cleeve Common Trust and support our work to keep the Common a beautiful and tranquil place for today’s visitors and for the benefit of future generations.
Membership costs £40 per year, with a concessionary rate for those receiving Universal Credit or Pension Credit. To join Cleeve Common Trust , go to our Membership page. For more information see our Frequently Asked Questions.
Member benefits include:
Free parking in the Quarry car park (usually £2 per visit)
Two free hot drinks from Flynn's on the Hill, the restaurant inside the golf club building
Two free child places at any of our family events, or one free adult place at one of our ticketed adult events.
Planning an event on Cleeve Common
Cleeve Common’s wide open spaces and rugged landscape make it an attractive setting for a wide variety of organized events, such as sponsored walks, orienteering, cross-country cycling and equestrian activities.
The Trust seeks to accommodate such events where possible, mindful of its primary responsibility for the long-term conservation of the Common.
You must have permission from the Trust to run an event on the Common which:
involves participants on cycles, horses or any other means of conveyance other than on foot, and/or
requires way-marking, setting up checkpoints or bringing vehicles or equipment on to the Common
is carried out for commercial purposes.
You do not need prior consent for groups of people simply meeting to walk or run on the Common. We nevertheless strongly advise you to contact us on Health and Safety grounds, so we can alert the Rangers in case emergency assistance or other help is needed.
We can also advise on dates (to avoid potential clashes with other events), bring local knowledge to bear in choosing the most appropriate route... and so help to ensure a safe and successful group activity for all concerned.
We will ask you for a donation to help cover our costs if Ranger support is required before, during or after your event.
Please contact us to notify us of your event plans.
Applying for a hacking licence
To ride a horse or pony on the Common, except on the few stretches of byway and bridleway along some edges of the Common, you need a Hacking Licence. For more information, visit our Things to Do page.
You will receive a numbered tag which should be attached to your bridle or saddle whenever you ride on the Common. You may use your licence tag with different horses, but it is not transferable to another person.
Licences cost £40 each for a full year (Mar - Feb)
I wish to apply for one or more licences to ride a horse or pony on Cleeve Common.
Notes on completing the application
1 Click ‘Join Us’. You should select ‘Horse rider’ as the membership type and complete your details.
2 It is best if each individual rider makes a separate application, so that the licence is in their name. However, if you do want another licence on your account (e.g. for a child), then in the Hacking Licence section, select 1 (or 2) additional licences before you checkout. Each licence costs £40. Should you already hold Cleeve Common Membership, please use this same method to obtain a hacking licence.
3 Payment can be made via card, PayPal BACS. Our bank account details are:
Account name: Cleeve Common Trust, Sort code: 30-91-87, Account number: 01135160
4 You will then receive a welcome email. Unfortunately this is system-generated and most of it does not apply to hacking licence holders. PLEASE NOTE: purchasing a hacking licence does NOT entitle you to free parking in the Quarry or Golf Club car parks.
5 We can provide a key for the kissing gate at the Radio Masts if required. There is a £10 deposit which is refundable should you no longer need it. Please contact us if you want a key, but you will need to pay the £10 by BACS. We will then include the key with your licence tag.
Joining the Cyclists mailing list and signing up to the cyclists code
All cyclists may use the byways along the edges of the Common (refer to local Ordnance Survey map).
Elsewhere on the Common, permissive access is granted to cyclists who sign up and adhere to the Cyclists' Code. Cyclists must keep to established tracks, avoiding environmentally sensitive areas such as scree slopes and quarries, and the Scheduled Ancient Monuments.
To sign up to our cyclists code and mailing list just complete the form below:
Applying for a commercial dog walking licence
While you are permitted to walk anywhere on the Common with your own dog, the access granted under the Countryside and Rights of Way Act (2000) does not extend to carrying out commercial activities on the Common. We therefore offer a licence for professional dog walking, similar to permits for horse riding (both pleasure and commercial). For a licence to be granted you must agree to abide by both our Canine Code and Commercial Dog Walkers Code.
Licences cost £120 and include car parking in the golf club and quarry car parks. To apply please pick the relevant membership from our MemberMojo site.
Memorial programme
We are now placing plaques on our second Memorial Wall, which is close to the iconic Three Sisters trees and offers a fine view over Prestbury and Cheltenham. To apply, please complete the form below.
The Memorial Programme allows local residents to make a donation in memory of a loved one that will support the conservation of Cleeve Common. Donations will help to maintain and enhance the Common’s natural beauty as a lasting and fitting tribute to the family member or friend.
We ask for a minimum donation of £600 for a plaque on the Wall for 25 years. Please note that this does not include the cost of the plaque. Donors will be invited to an annual guided walk to see and hear about our ongoing conservation management of the Common.
If you are a UK taxpayer, we’d also ask you to complete the Gift Aid declaration, which enables us to increase the value of your donation by 25% at no extra cost to you. Thank you.
The minimum donation is £600, which guarantees a place on the memorial wall for 25 years. Please note that this does not cover the cost of the plaque. We will confirm receipt of the application and your donation, along with follow-up guidance on the next steps.
If you would prefer to complete a paper form or have any other questions, please contact us .
